First licensed by Catherine McDonnell in 1846, the premises now known as Nancy's has stood at the heart of Carlow town for almost 200 years, becoming one of the area’s most recognisable and enduring social landmarks. Located in the Haymarket opposite the Town Hall, the building has witnessed generations of change, serving the people

of Carlow through famine, prosperity, celebration and reinvention.

Throughout its long history, the premises has traded under many well-known names including McDonnells, Heavins, Ewings, Swifts, The Stables, Crow’s Nest, Nancy Whiskey’s and most recently Moka Coffee. Each chapter brought its own character and atmosphere, from traditional public house and lively music venue to modern café and gathering space, reflecting the evolving social life of Carlow itself.

For decades, the building has been more than simply a business. It has been a meeting place, a venue for stories, music, conversation and community, with generations of locals passing through its doors. While the name above the entrance changed over time, the spirit of hospitality and connection remained constant. Old Irish pubs have a habit of absorbing the personalities of everyone who passes through them.
